When I arrived in Manila, I didn’t know how to ride a bus or jeepney because I couldn’t find a bus stop sign or station. If I couldn’t use the internet, I would (1) not have a clue how to find the place where to “get on” and “get off”. However, I downloaded useful apps called “Sakay.ph”. It gives directions in Metro Manila for jeepneys, trains, buses P2P, UV express, shuttles, and the Pasig River Ferry.
I highly appreciate the creator and programmer who launched this app. I imagine they must’ve overcome huge troubles creating it after quitting being (3) a cog on the machine. It will support (4) not only locals but also foreigners like me who want to explore the neighborhood. Nevertheless, I was a little scared to use it for real. The reason was I’ve read several negative information from a guide book or the internet about the local public transportation. After I used Jeepneys, trains, buses in real life, I thought (2) the coast is clear if I keep my wits about me. Most Filipinos were kind when I asked directions for the nearest train station or bus stop. Recently I read “Factfulness” by Hans Rosling. The author shows us the fear instinct often misleads our judgment. If I simply obey that instinct, I could not communicate with the kind locals, I could not explore the neighborhood, I could not get new experiences.
