A good book, in my opinion, introduces other interesting books. One of those special books is “Justice.” The complete title is “Justice, What’s the right thing to do?”, by Michael J. Sandel who is a famous philosophy professor at the University of Oxford. Most people in Japan were in a flap when the translated version was published in 2010.

It mentioned 3 other dystopian stories, “The one’s walk away from Omelas,” “Brave New World,” and “Harrison Bergeron.” I’ve already read 2 out of the 3 and have yet to read the last one. “Harrison Bergeron” shows us nightmare of perfectly equal world.

The author, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., wrote of a scary future. Over average intelligent people have to wear earphones that make (2)fizzing or buzzing noises every twenty seconds to interrupt their thoughts! Harrison is the 14-year old son of the Bergeron couple. The United State Handicapper General had taken him away and never allowed his parents to (3)fetch him. Since Harrison was good looking and highly intelligent, he was considered an extraordinary person. Their highly controlled society didn’t allow his parents any feelings of sadness even when they lost their son.

What kind of person is an egalitarian? Is this the kind of egalitarianism to solve discrimination in the world? I can hear Vonnegut’s strong opinion from this story. If many people stop thinking deeply, it is no different from permitting the world to change as if it were a bad dream. After the change, even though people say it was (4)against their better judgment, the excuse is meaningless and too late. This story is really short, but the metaphor is amazingly deep.

If you do something, even though you feel it is not a sensible thing to do, you do it against your better judgement.
