It was the first time I attended a new event and my Taiwanese friend invited me. My Taiwanese friend invited me to this event long ago and yesterday was the first time I attended it. It’s a group that reads and dicusses articles from The Economist website. First experiences are always scary but it is a feeling a that is also mixed with interest and expectation. My New Years resolution was try to a new thing once a week. So I kept to my resolution. The event’s name is “The Economist Readers”.
It was slated on June 19th 9:00-11:00 at Renoir Cafe’s meeting room#2 in Shinbashi. There were 7 Attendees including myself, 3 men and 4 women; a Taiwanese man and a woman from Myanmar, the rest were Japanese. The attendance fee was the price of one’s own drink and the meeting room cost which was divided between the attendees.
Here’s the agenda
1. Check the newest articles on The Economist (1 week)
2. Choose an article you would like to recommend to the group and send the URL on the group’s time line. (1 minute)
3. Order a drink (1 minute)
4. Speech. Say why you chose the article (1 minute)
5. Vote and select the top 3 articles (5 minutes)
6. Presentation of the selected article (10 minutes)
7. Discussion ( 30 minutes)
8. Pay the attendance fee
If you wish, you can go out to the lunch with the other members. Almost all members speak English fluently, and their presentation skills were also remarkable. The discussion was amazingly interesting that every member talked freely with a wide range and meaning.
Here’s the program we chose on June 19th.
1. LinkedIn Acquisition
2. Screen behind bars
3. Universal Income
The event is effective in improving reading and presentation skills.
