I read an article about gambling disorder from a magazine called “The Big Issue”. It’s a monthly magazine, but it’s not available at bookstores because it is sold by homeless people on the street. It originated in England with the aim of helping homeless people be more financially independent. This is a cynical situation if the seller has a gambling disorder. I like this ambivalence because it clearly reflects our society which makes it interesting. When I heard of this social business, I had to respect the insouciant entrepreneur mind. Japanese society has some problems, however, most citizens are complacent with their own lives. Most people don’t want to know about the dark side of society. I don’t blame them. In that regard, I’m the same as everybody. The reason why I buy the magazine is when the magazine’s topic interests me. The magazine is valuable for me because of its varied viewpoints. It’s not donating.
When I talked to my friend that I bought it, she said: “Aren’t you afraid to buy from that kind of person?” I was surprised and vexed because it felt like incorrigible discrimination. However, I was reticent to give a good reply. Why couldn’t I say “It does not violate any regulations”? Gambling addiction is never picked up widely big media because of it’s connections with big companies with political and economic clout.
