I went to The National Museum of Western Art in Ueno last Friday.
It was my first time to visit it.
This is one of the famous museums in Tokyo. It’s always crowded. Especially on weekend, you can see the long lines in front of the ticket office. I’ve heard that someone waited to buy tickets almost 2 hours….

Therefore I didn’t make the same mistake. I bought my ticket online before the day of my visit.
It was certainly the right way.
Threre were a lot of people in spite of it being a friday morning!
There were students on a school trip, foreign travelers and elderly travelers from countryside, etc….

I had an easy time gettng in because I had a web ticket. I didn’t need to wait at all.
The special exhibition ticket is 1,600 yen for adults.(about US$9.41) It includes access to the permanent exhibition.

I enjoyed the exhibition “Caravaggio— and his time: friends , rivals and enemies”.
This special exhibition is held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy until 12th of June.

I saw a total of 51 paintings.
They showed 10 of Caravaggio’s artworks.
His paintings were showen in different sections and they were displayed beside a similar painting with the same theme from a different artist.

The most interesting section was the special section, “Ecce Homo” which means “Behold the man” in Latin.

I could compared the 2 paintings which were of almost the same composition but made by different artist at the same time.

One was caravaggio’s oil painting which was collected by a museum in Genoa. The other one was Cigoli’s painting which was collected by a museum in florence.

In my opinion, It’s one of the real pleasures to go to a museum’s special exhibition.
