I read the interview of Japanese famous Comic artist, Mari Yamazaki on the website, HOBO NIKKAN ITOI SHINBUN several days ago. I read her Comic, ”Thermae Romae” this February because my friend lent it to me, but I didn’t know any details about her life. I was impressed by her biography that I couldn’t imagine it.

When she was 17, she started to learn art history and oil painting in the National Art School of Florence Academy in Italy. She fell in love with a poet and they started living together when she was 18. They were young artists, thus they were severely impoverished. The poet didn’t (1-1)run up big expenses, but had difficult to earn enough to cover their daily expenses. Their apartment would always either have the gas, water or electricity cut. She had (2)run up against this miserable situation for 11 years and she stuck by him so she could enjoy their artistic life and culture. However, after she became pregnant, she stopped (4)building bridges between the poet and her life. The reason was the changing of her priority which was the need to protect her baby.

She wanted to become success oil painter, but she (3)scaled back her dream to become a comic artist instead after she came back in Japan. She said that she just tried whether she could adjust herself to Japanese society or not. She became a comic artist in 1997 in Japan. Her strategy was successful because her comic won a famous prize in 2010. She was 51 years old at the time of this interview. Her experience is powerful, and her message is positive. “Don’t be afraid of your failure! It’s not your debt! It’s your property. It increases your value.”
