I applied for a 2-day seminar which will be held on Saturday and Sunday in Ikebukuro. A typhoon is also coming this weekend. However, it’s (4)no-brainer because I don’t want to (1)lose out on this opportunity of meeting my favorite author, Sato Masaru. Honestly, This seminar’s theme is complicated, which is about Nationalism. Mr. Sato will conduct lectures on the “Problem of Nationalism” based on the book; “National Identity” by Anthony D. Smith published 1991. Sato said that “It does not permit us to ignore about the problem of Nationalism. because it’s the main reason of imbalance in the whole world”. This is the reason why he planned this event. One of his aims is analyzing ethnic conflict, and allow the attendees to consider it.

Here ’s the time schedule and topics.
July 28th Sat.
10:30~12:00 #1:Specificity of National Identity
13:00~14:30 #2:Base of Ethnicity
15:30~17:00 #3:Appeal of Nation
18:00~19:30 #4:Nationalism and Cultural Identity
July 29th Sun
10:30~12:00 #5:Possibility of making a Nation
13:00~14:30 #6:Secessionist &pluralism nationalism
15:30~17:00 #7:Possibility of beyond National Identity

It looks so interesting and I’m really looking forward to getting a new point of view from this event. On the other hand, I’m also afraid that the lecture may prove extremely tough for me so I have to (2)make do and be patient.

About the phrasal verb make for– this is usually used when talking about physical direction. Of course, it can sometimes be used for something theoretical but often as a joke or exaggeration.
e.g The event organizer better serve refreshments or else the attendees will be making for the exits.

homework:
(1)lose out on: Miss or be deprived of something.
(e.g.) “I watched the documentary until the end so as not to lose out on anything.”
“Because I left before the end of the year I lost out on the annual bonus.”
(2)make do with: Use something less satisfactory as an alternative.
(e.g.) “There were no chairs to sit on so we had to make do with a pile of boxes.”
(3)make for: Move in the direction of; head for.
(e.g.) “Let’s make for the exit before the crowd starts to leave.”
(4)no-brainer: A decision or choice that requires little or no thought, because the best option is so obvious, is called a no-brainer.
(e.g.) The choice was between a cash refund or having the amount credited to my account – it was a no-brainer. I took the cash!

notice
In this article, I try to appropriate use 4 phrasal verbs(No.1~4) in this article which I write my daily life and thoughts because I’m learning English. This is one of writing training.
