Bunraku is a traditional Japanese puppet play. It was my first time to watch it last Saturday. I’ve been wanting to watch it for a long time, because when I was around 28 or 29 years old, I joined an amateur puppet play group in my hometown. The group leader’s job was as a designer and painter, he had amazing talents to create original stories and puppets. He has already passed away, but it’s another story not related to this theme, so I’ll set some time to write about it in the future. I learned a lot of things from him.
I watched “The Tale of the Morning Glory”. The theme is a tragedy of love. The main character is ASAGAO(morning glory) who is a young beautiful daughter of a powerful samurai. She was infatuated with ASOJIRO who is a young good looking samurai. He saved her ③more by accident by than design when some bad guys tried to rape her.
However, that was the beginning of the tragedy.They fell in love, but the fate ①imperiled their engagement. Some events conspired to keep them apart. ASAGAO’s parents had chosen another man for her, so she fled her home when the time to keep her promise impended. But she always wept in longing Asojiro, and it has caused her to go blind. She became a beggar and a blind street musician. In the conclusion, the story had a happy ending.
