I chose the book for February’s book club meeting. It’s “Memoirs of Hadrian” by Marguerite Yourcenar. The reason I chose it is it because it is related to January’s assignment book. That book’s author wrote that he will choose “Memoirs of Hadrian” if he were permitted to bring just only one book if he were to go to a deserted island. This phrase inspired several members including myself. Hadrian has been described as the most versatile of all Roman emperors.

“Emperor Hadrian might be one of the characters of ‘Thermae Romae’ which is a famous Japanese comedy comic.” my friend said.
“Really? I’m not sure. I’ve read only volume 1 several years ago.”
“I have the complete series, volume 1 to 6, It’s not on Kindle but the paperback version. The protagonist is an Ancient Roman architect called Lucius backed up by Hadrian.”
“That’s sounds interesting! Can I borrow your books?”
“Sure.”

So I’m reading both books now. The comic is so funny and strange because Lucius came through time and space from Ancient Rome to modern-day Japan. He was surprised by an innovative bathing culture of a “flat-faced clan” and brought back some implements to ancient Rome. Lucius created bathing innovations so his reputation grew. However, a union of old-style public bath houses in Rome lost customers, and they (3)banded together in protest against him. So Lucius time traveled again, had a new idea, and (2)bailed out the old-style of public bathing in Rome.

In another case, the antagonist of Emperor Hadrian tricked Lucius. Bandits attacked him in a rural area. However, he didn’t (4)beat a hasty retreat. He expressed his idea to the bandits and he created a new industry in the countryside with the bandits’ help! This comic is fiction, but the author Mari Yamazaki created the story based on historical research. This is a good opportunity to have fun while learning the culture of ancient Rome.
