I finished watching the first season of “DARK”, a German TV drama. It was the first time that I heard German after such a long time. Season 1 has 10 episodes and 1 episode is about 44 – 56 minutes. Thus, I listened to German for approximately 10 hours, but unfortunately, I couldn’t (2)absorb any grammar or vocabulary. I chose to set the audio in German, and the subtitles in English. In my case, I’m English learner, so I should have probably set both in English.
But I couldn’t listen to the English audio because I watched episode 1 in German. I tried to listen to episode 2 in English, but I felt uneasy of the mismatch between the voice and the actors. That was the reason I couldn’t change the original audio.
Anyway, three things surprised me. Firstly, Some female characters had the same or higher role or position as men in a company or police force in the German society in 1986! (This is a time travel story, so there are 3 eras; 1953, 1986, 2019) Of course, It’s a work of fiction, but the creators absolutely researched the background of every period to create a realistic atmosphere. That would be impossible with the same era in Japanese society. I guess Japanese women still haven’t acquired this level of authority even in 2017.
Secondly, I recognized that our civilization is rapidly changing, especially in the last hundred years… earphones, smartphones, and light without heat using long life battery. I noticed several
inventions in this story.
Finally, human desire will never ever change. Parents, who lost their children, waited and prayed with (3)bated breath (this is grammatically correct however bated breath usually has the feeling of waiting in excitement) that they would come back home safely. Love affairs, Doubt, Hate, jealous, betrayal etc… I watched many ‘dark’ sides of a human.
As a consequence, I learned those things from this drama. but nowadays, the time travel theme is a hackneyed situation. In my opinion, It’s just a little bit simple as dualism about the fight between good and fanatic evil. Thus, If I can get the original story, I prefer to read it than watching TV.

homework: (1)acquire, (2)absorb,
expression: (3)bated breath
If you wait for something with bated breath, you are both anxious and excited about an imminent event.
We waited with bated breath for the winner to be announced.
