Michiko Ishimure passed away on February 10th 2018. She was 90 years old. All I knew about her was that she was a famous novelist who wrote about the Minamata disease; It ’s a severe form of mercury poisoning and one of the significant diseases brought about by pollution in Japan. However, I didn’t have the inclination to read her work until I heard of her passing and also because nobody told me how beautiful her novel is.
I (1)came upon her novel “Story of the Sea of Camellias” from an anonymous tweet. Somebody recommended I read it because it’s her best work. It mentioned about her extraordinary talent of expression. So, I borrowed her novel from the library and started reading. I read it before I sleep but I found that it’s not that easy to (2-1)conk out while doing so, because her world is so vivid with beautiful Japanese expressions. This novel (3)consists of a rural accent and standard Japanese. Almost all characters speak in a dialect. I guess it’s difficult to understand completely if people aren’t familiar with it, but it is the main reason for her novel’s outstanding beauty. Familiar words and unfamiliar sentences are mingled together in a balanced harmony. It is like reading (4)the best of both worlds. I find it hard define it’s the beauty. Even Socrates also couldn’t do so in Hippias Major. I simply felt her novel is so rich and beautiful.

Almost characters speak in dialect. I guess it’s difficult to understand completely if people don’t know the knowledge of dialect. But that is one reason her novel’s beauty created. There are familiar words and unfamiliar sentenced mixed, but the harmony is balanced. We can read (4)the best of both worlds. I can’t definitely define the beauty. Even Socrates also couldn’t in Hippias Major. I simply felt her novel is so beautiful and fertility.
