Sometimes I feel a strange atmosphere in Japan nowadays. I am aware the reason is obvious but I’m doubting the supremacy of consumption. The next generation will have a totally different future and the surveys show it. People don’t want to buy new cars, they are not interested in consuming alcohol nor do they want to watch TV.
Last Saturday I asked one of my friends, “Why do you need so much money?” We had been discussing how to try starting some side business in our online group. She said, “I want to live in a bigger house that has a swimming pool! I need a housekeeper! I want to travel! I want to eat delicious food! I want to buy the latest home electronics! These are the reasons why I need more money.” I smiled and agreed with her, but secretly let out a sigh.
Honestly, my interests couldn’t be more different. Especially these days. Maybe I’m getting old. I’ve realized I won’t be happier even if I get a lot of stuff. Experience and self-improvement are more important and bring me profound happiness.
