In November 1880, Dostoevsky accomplished one of his masterpieces. He wanted to write another story continuing the story of one of his protagonists. Unfortunately, it didn’t come into fruition because he died of a pulmonary aneurysm in 1881.

One hundred thirty seven years later, I’ve read his work, Brothers Karamazov and held a book club meeting in a Russian restaurant. Honestly, if I didn’t do it, I couldn’t finish reading famous classic novels. This is my strategy when my back is against the wall. The meeting day is my deadline.

The venue is most of the time a rental room, but this time I decided to have a change. Since I thought it was really difficult to finish reading, I needed another reward. It was a good solution and I also got new knowledge.

The novel was based on the author’s biography, so I read some articles from related reference books. Dostoevsky’s was considerably constrained by the Russian government while writing this novel. When he was 28, Dostoevsky was arrested for conspiring to subjugate the government. At first he was sentenced to death but it was commuted to to 2 years of imprisonment in Siberia due to his youth. The experience made a huge impact on him. He precisely constituted the novel which secretly included snippets of his real life. It is an interesting mystery novel. We enjoyed talking about this kinds of things while we ate delicious Russian food.
