I talked to my friend about how to look for a diamond in the rough.
Last Friday night I brought a small gift to my new friend. It’s her favorite rice ball that was made near my office. She changed jobs several years ago, so it’s difficult for her to buy it often. I remembered what she said when I gave it to her, she had an ebullient smile. We chose to eat at a Taiwanese restaurant in Shinbashi. It’s full of vociferous spice aromas. We ate thin noodles with coriander and green sprouts of beans with garlic and fried chicken with anise.
We had talked about our favorite books, our own struggles at work, our itinerary for Kyoto etc…I empathized with her when I heard that her colleagues an inimical response at a meeting. After a while, I asked her “what is thing you want to do most right now?” “I will create my own publishing company because it’s my pleasure to support an upcoming author. But its impossible in my current situation,” she said without sounding pompous.
After I arrived home, I sent her a message: “You’re an astute editor, so you’ll find a diamond in the rough in the near future.”
