The small bookstore was narrow, but the depth of a room was deep. The wall was made of a natural wood board, of which I could see the printed brand. Approximately 40 people sat in small chairs and waited for the event to start which was called, “What is storytelling?” I was so smitten with the event because I had never watched that kind of thing where an author improvises a new story from scratch.
The event was presided by a Japanese author, Mr.Ishii, who was born in 1966. His novels have been nominated and had won some prizes in the category of fantasy (?). I enjoyed his performance of writing.
I had a chance to ask a question at the end of the event.
I raise my right hand and asked him, “Why are you so funny?” Everyone laughed at my simple and childish question at that time.
“I don’t know!” He smiled. “Well…Maybe I have something. For instance, as I was on a street waiting for the traffic lights to turn from red to green, a little girl came and suddenly asked me to, “Mimic monkey, please?” “Yes, of course,” I replied and I did.
The other day, a strange child sat on my knee with legitimate firmness as if she was sitting on a seat on a train. I always open my mind and try not be stunned. That may be the reason why I might be funny.”
“You smashed my stereotype image of an author who is stubborn. I haven’t met author like you before” I replied. “See you again somewhere,” he said gently.
I shivered with delight when I heard his answer. I learned the importance of having an agile mind from him.
