An enormously rich and talented man succumbs to the temptation of a shrewd and attractive woman. “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin described it well. In my opinion, it is the main theme of this short story. There are only 3 characters in it; Mr.Brantain is an unattractive yet rich young man. Miss.Nathalie is a handsome lady beloved by Brantain and finally, Mr.Harvy a long standing friend of Miss Nathalie. Nathalie doesn’t understand Brantain’s personality so much, and just maintains an outward appearance of looking up to him yet inwardly, desires his wealth.

When I read “Oedipus Rex”, I felt afraid for Jocasta who is Oedipus’s wife (as well as mother). In my opinion, she also an ulterior motive for wealth and power more than loving her own child. I’m also a woman like them but I don’t expect power nor property from a man. It might make more sense in the future all over the world but it might bring another problem. Anyway, I’m glad I’m living in Japan in this era. An ulterior motive might be enough motivation to go on living but we don’t know what results this might bring.

Title: Strength = an ulterior motive?
An enormously rich man who has some talents needs to warn temptation of an attractive shrewd woman. “The Kiss” by Kate Chopin described it well. In my opinion, this is the main theme in this short story. There are only 3 characters in it; Mr.Brantain is an unattractive but rich young man. Miss.Nathalie is a handsome lady who is loved by Brantain. The last, Mr.Harvy is a best friend of Brantain of long standing. She doesn’t understand his personality so much, and just glance up into the surface on him. she only loves his property.

When I’ve read “The Oedipus the King”, I felt fear to Jocasta who is Oedipus’s wife (and mother). In my point of view, she had also an ulterior motive for property and power more than love own child. I guess. I’m also a woman as them but I don’t expect to get any power and property from a male. It will be more common sense in the future all over the world. It will bring another problem, but anyway, I’m glad I’m living this era in Japan. However, I realized that even an ulterior motive will give strength for living. I don’t know what results will bring.
